Dreaming In Blackbirds: Atheists →

dreaminginblackbirds:

A lot of people pride themselves on being atheists. Which defeats the purpose of basing your beliefs on the absence of something. You should be an atheist first and foremost out of laziness, and secondly that you want to be left alone. And by the way; No, NOBODY is “persecuting” you for being an…

I can’t speak for all the nonbelievers, but I think you’re mistaken. My personal pride as an atheist stems from being able to stand back from a given subject (in this case, the set of beliefs and theology I grew up with) and impartially weigh in the evidence for and against it, then, after some deliberation, come up with a fully-informed conclusion— which in my case that there is not enough evidence to suppose the existence of a god or gods, and therefore, no reason to waste time and energy participating in religious activities such as prayer, church, and other forms of worship.

I think you’re wholly confused on why people are atheists at all, it’s not that we’re lazy and don’t feel like pursuing religion, truth, or our spirituality; it’s quite the opposite in fact. Many of us came to atheism after intensely studying our religious beliefs and finding the doctrines at odds with currently understood scientific data, and/or finding that they are insufficient to justify our beliefs.

As for persecution, I could cite many, many studies stating that atheists are the least trusted minority in the United States, that an openly atheist presidential candidate would never stand a chance to being voted into office, and the base prejudice against atheists passed along through the smear campaign against Communism in the 1950’s. Many of us have experienced this persecution firsthand. I myself was escorted out of a fun-park once because a mother at a birthday party freaked out that there was an atheist at the facility and pitched a fit that “these people” were welcome in places that catered to children (the full story is one of the earliest posts in my blog, if you’re interested.)

As for your original post, look back and read it again carefully and ask yourself if you actually understand what atheism is. It’s not a set of beliefs. It’s the rejection of said beliefs, usually originating from intense study of said beliefs. Believe it or not, atheists usually know more about the Bible and its doctrines than Christians themselves. For example, did you know that in Numbers 31, the Midianites were massacred by Moses and the Israelites; every man, woman, and young boy… “But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.” (Num. 31-17)

All in all, consider what you post before you put it online, because you will be scrutinized and judged based on what you put out there. Based on the lackadaisical nature of your post, I doubt you intended to offend anyone with this, but keep in mind that what you said is offensive, and it speaks to your (unwitting) ignorance of who atheists are and how they come to be atheists.

The more you know. =)

travisestrella:

Bought some comedy DVDs at the Used Crap store. These are from the guy that runs the creation museum in Kentucky. A lengthy review of each of these will be up later. I just wanted to point out that I bought these for $1.50 each, but they originally retailed for $12.99. That’s a $51.96 value for $6.

By Grabthar’s Hammer, what savings.

My fiancée thinks I’m crazy for buying these, but my logic is sound. For $6 I get 200 minutes of fact free comedy. Musical performances from a “recording artist with many popular recordings” - such as “Behemoth is a Dinosaur” and “I Don’t Believe in Evolution”. A possible explanation on how they got a stegosaurus onto Noah’s Ark. And a possible answer to my burning question: why would a man rock a beard only popular in Amish country? I don’t plan on eating while watching this. Also, for $6, I just potentially saved a poor confused soul from stumbling onto these and, after a long string of unfortunate events (which might include subscribing to their “magazine”, books, videos, seminars and other misinformation) leads that soul into our school boards or government elections and demand that we teach our children that science is a bunch of hooey. I’m okay with $6. Especially since it doesn’t go directly to their pockets.

“…with music by Buddy Davis, an internationally recognized dinosaur sculptor…” That is hilarious! That guy is so unqualified to comment on the nature of dinosaurs, they can’t even attempt to call him a paleontologist! Look at his picture, he has the explorer’s hat, vest, and everything to make him look like Alan Grant from “Jurassic Park,” but he’s just a sculptor and a children’s song writer! I haven’t laughed so hard in a very long time!

Satan has Boobs

There’s no other explanation. How else could one entity tempt so many men into committing atrocity? How else could an entity that is obviously pure evil have so many on its side?

The answer is clear: Awesome Boobage.

"If God does not exist, everything is permissible."

Fyodor Dostoevsky (via mgracegacesc)

Ah, yes, Dostoevsky’s oft-quoted phrase about the existence of god and its impact on morality. Tell me, does anyone know who Dostoevsky was? What his thoughts and ideas were? Or did you simply find a quote that coincided with your personal beliefs and repost it without even thinking?

Here’s a link to some info on Dostoevsky, and you’ll quickly learn that far from being an enlightened soul on the grounds of morality, he was just a brainwashed member of the Russian Orthodox Church, and was more than willing to advocate genocide to promote religious homogeny in Russia.

Great author, though. Enjoyed his work.

"The atheist can’t find God for the same reason that a thief can’t find a police officer."

- Funny, you’d think that no atheist ever, EVER was on a search for God, and then, finding all available arguments and evidences, false, fallacious, or fallible, realized that there probably is no god?

It’s stuff like this that paints atheists as guilt-ridden children hiding from their parents, and is wholly inaccurate.

The Myth of America’s Christian Heritage →

deconversionmovement:

Once they begin to circulate, falsehoods—like counterfeit currency—are surprisingly tenacious. It doesn’t matter that there’s no backing for them. The only thing that counts is that people believe they have backing. Then, like bad coins, they turn up again and again.

One counterfeit idea that circulates with frustrating stubbornness is the claim that America was founded as a Christian nation. It’s one of the Christian Right’s mantras and a favorite talking point for televangelists, religious bloggers, born-again authors and lobbyists, and pulpit preachers. Take, for example, the Reverend Peter Marshall. Before his death in 2010, he strove mightily (and loudly) to “restore America to its traditional moral and spiritual foundations,” as his still-active website says, by telling the truth about “America’s Christian heritage.” Or consider WallBuilders, a “national pro-family organization” founded by David Barton, whose mission is “educating the nation concerning the Godly foundation of our country.” Called “America’s historian” by his admirers, Barton is a prolific writer of popular books that spin his Christian version of American history. And then there’s Cynthia Dunbar, an attorney and one-time professor at Liberty University School of Law. She’s another big pusher of the Christian America currency. Her 2008 polemic One Nation Under God proclaims that the Christian “foundational truths” on which the nation rests are being “eroded” by a “socialistic, secularistic, humanistic mindset” from which Christians need to take back the country.

OBAMA'S EVOLVING MORALITY CHALLENGES RELIGIOUS ABSOLUTISTS →

Another Psychology Today article, this one about the evolving nature of moral relativism in today’s society and the resistance it faces from moral absolutists and the religious right.

Psychology Today - Why More Nonbelievers Are Openly Identifying →

Apr. 15, 2012—

An article on not just the great “coming out” of new atheists, but also the importance of doing so for all closeted nonbelievers.

You know…

For all the crap we get for being atheists, we have a lot going for us.

  • We’re more likely to be intelligent
  • We’re more likely to be compassionate
  • We’re more likely to be tolerant
  • We’re more likely to be generous
  • Most of us have actively questioned the beliefs we were raised with and, when finding the answers lacking, turned away from them.
  • We are less likely to commit crimes
  • We are less likely to be in prison
  • Most of us find an inherent beauty in the universe, and that we (as a part of that universe) are both infinitely grand and infinitely insignificant in the scheme of the Cosmos— specks of temporal dust that flicker in and out of cognition in an instant, but in such said instant, can wonder at that magnificence all around us, without having to be bound by the blinders that anthropocentric religions would put on us.
  • We’re more likely to have empathy for other communities that may be discriminated against (LGBT, et.al.)

All in all, we’re a pretty awesome group of people. Let’s not allow the false notion that we’re “bad” or “immoral” dampen the joy that comes with us finding out who we are, and where we belong in the universe.
